Ahead of World Breastfeeding Week, a new bulletin from the Polish Committee for the Promotion of Breastfeeding (Komitet Upowszechniania Karmienia Piersią, KUKP) offers a timely look at current developments in breastfeeding support, neonatal nutrition, and baby- and family-friendly hospital care in Poland.

An infant’s hospitalization for respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, can affect the well-being of the whole family. RSV often causes cold-like symptoms, but some infants develop bronchiolitis or pneumonia and require hospital care. A European observational study examined whether the severity of an infant RSV infection was associated with parents’ health-related quality of life and family functioning.

Many infants born preterm continue to experience intermittent hypoxia after routine caffeine treatment ends. A large randomized study found that extending caffeine therapy reduced these low-oxygen episodes and lowered one inflammatory marker, although no differences were seen on brain imaging. The findings support further investigation of extended caffeine therapy before routine care is changed.
