European Parliamentary Interest Group

The European Parliamentary Interest Group on Maternal and Neonatal Health was founded in May 2011 by Professor Angelika Niebler and Dr. Peter Liese, both Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). This group brings together a diverse coalition of MEPs united by their commitment to improving maternal and neonatal health across Europe.

The Interest Group champions open dialogue and advocacy to ensure every baby born in Europe has the best possible start in life. Its focus includes prevention, enhanced care for preterm and newborn infants, and the integration of maternal and neonatal health considerations into all relevant EU policies and initiatives.

Under the leadership of Professor Angelika Niebler and Dr. Peter Liese, the group collaborates closely with GFCNI to achieve its goals, which include:

  • recognizing preterm birth as a growing public health challenge within the EU;

  • advocating for prevention measures before and during pregnancy;

  • raising awareness of the risks, health impacts, and societal burdens associated with preterm birth and neonatal health issues;

  • highlighting the short- and long-term challenges for affected families and society as a whole.

Through this vital collaboration, the group drives EU-wide action to improve outcomes for mothers, newborns, and their families. Explore the members of this influential group below.
